India’s land size covers 2.4% of the total land mass on the planet. According to the 2019 Livestock Census, we currently have a livestock population of 536.76 Million. The inefficacy of land use for animal agriculture results in multiple concerns for our future on the planet.
Livestock occupies 77% of global agricultural land and only provides 18% of the world’s caloric supply. Animal-based food systems are highly inefficient and destructive to our planet, health and animal welfare.
Initiated by Jeeva Bhavana, our flagship project seeks to empower farmers with ethical and sustainable agricultural practices. We strive to build economic autonomy for our farmers and food sovereignty for the Indian population.
Our unique model of holistic natural farming practices cares for the environment and promotes the ethical treatment of animals while ensuring optimal nutrition and human health.
Our farmers are duly compensated for their know-how and labour and take their role as guardians of seeds and soil health seriously by adhering to true natural farming techniques. Animals living on the farm are not bred, exploited or sent to slaughter, but instead live alongside their human caretakers who ensure that their basic species-specific needs are satisfied until their natural death.
Our farmers learn the value of the conscious, nurturing and holistic approach embodied in the charter. Currently, we work with a select group of farmers in Maharashtra to ease coordination and work on establishing suitable and reliable distribution channels for their produce.
The Government provides large amounts of subsidies to animal-based farming systems. At the same time, animal products contribute to only a tiny percentage of our dietary requirements and nutrition, all the while raising multiple health and environmental concerns. We aim to build a sustainable model for agriculture to ensure we meet the needs of a growing population with a strong focus on an optimal whole-foods plant-based diet which is not only much better for our health but also better for the planet.
These factors make for a particular set of challenges and thus we need your support to ensure that we can bring natural farming to the forefront for better health, a cleaner environment and happier animals.
